Dealing With County Court Judgments

County Court Judgments (CCJs) are only served in cases of very bad debt, and if you have these on your credit report they can prevent you from being eligible to apply for credit products in the future. It is not easy to get a CCJ removed from your credit file, and the only real way is to pay off the debt in question, within the time period set by the court.

There are several companies operating around the country that claim they can remove CCJ's from your credit file. Unfortunately this is not as simple as they make out, and in fact what they try to do in most cases is get the CCJ removed from the Register of Country Court Judgments by trying to prove it was listed in error. Most lenders are experienced in submitting CCJ's, so in reality errors very rarely occur, and even if this tactic is successful it doesn't prevent any of your other debtors from filing another CCJ in the future against you.

Settling a CCJ

The best way to settle a CCJ is to approach it head on, and don't just ignore it and hope it goes away. Once you have received notice of a CCJ then you will have 21 days to put forward your case to the court. This is very important in cases where identity theft has occurred, as this may be the first you have heard of the debt as it was made illegally in your name, and this is your chance to put forward reasons why this debt should not be settled on you. If the debt is valid, you will still be able to provide any extenuating circumstances to the court as to why you have been unable to pay this debt, which may include serious illness, redundancy, bereavement etc.

If the court rules that the debt is valid they will arrange a payment schedule for you and it is very important you try and meet this schedule as if the court is satisfied you have managed to settle the amount required within the time stated, they will then change the status of your CCJ to 'settled' on your credit report, and this will be far less damaging to your good name.
